Jannik Sinner’s French Open journey came to an end as he suffered a dramatic loss to Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Despite winning the first two sets comfortably, Sinner lost momentum and eventually the match in five sets at Roland Garros.
The match started with Sinner dominating the court, winning the first two sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier with ease, only dropping five games along the way. However, his strong lead took a turn when Cerundolo staged a remarkable comeback, winning six consecutive games in the third set after Sinner had taken a 5-1 lead.
During the match, Sinner sought a medical timeout while leading 5-4 in the third set, citing feelings of dizziness. After receiving treatment off the court, he returned to play but faced an uphill battle as Cerundolo seized control, eventually winning the match.
Cerundolo’s victory sets up a third-round clash with either Martin Landaluce or Vit Kopriva, both unseeded players in the tournament. Sinner, who was considered an early favorite following Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal due to injury, faced an unexpected defeat at Roland Garros.
The match’s unfolding events prompted TNT Sports commentator Nick Mullins to question co-commentator Miles Maclagan about the handling of Sinner’s situation by the chair umpire. Maclagan expressed disapproval of the rules around medical timeouts, highlighting the challenges faced by players in such scenarios.
