Two sisters were seen smiling as they were taken into custody by the police following the brutal killing of a mother of five. Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, and Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, were apprehended in Del Rio, located near the Mexico border in Texas, shortly after allegedly stabbing Caroline Peña to death in broad daylight. Video footage captured outside the suspects’ residence showed Kitty grinning as she was escorted by officers to a patrol car on a Thursday afternoon.
Amaya was also observed giggling after she apparently shouted at a camera to stop recording. Another individual, Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, was also arrested in connection with the murder by the Del Rio Police Department.
According to a spokesperson from the Del Rio Police Department, the incident took place on June 25, 2026, at around 2:10 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a female victim with multiple stab wounds at Val Verde Regional Medical Center. The victim was transferred to a medical facility in San Antonio due to the seriousness of her injuries.
The motive behind the killing has not been disclosed publicly yet. Investigators have obtained surveillance footage and conducted interviews with several witnesses. The suspects, Kitty Mia Diaz, Amaya Cookie Diaz, and Kyandra Renee Faz, were arrested without incident and taken to the Del Rio Police Department for processing.
Later that day, it was reported that the victim had succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead around 9 p.m. Following the victim’s death, Faz and the Diaz sisters were charged with murder. The three suspects were held at the GEO Correctional Facility awaiting legal proceedings. Independent journalist Michael Elizondo mentioned witnessing the events at the Diaz’s home and described the demeanor of the suspects during the arrest.
Elizondo recalled the behavior of the suspects, noting one of the sisters being in a cheerful mood even during the serious situation. He described the scene of one of the sisters sticking out her tongue and goofing off as she was being taken into custody.
