Winnipeg Jets’ goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck, a decorated athlete with an Olympic gold medal and three Vezina trophies under his belt, has made a public request for a trade.
Speculation surrounding the future of the star player has been ongoing among hockey enthusiasts and journalists for several months. Hellebuyck confirmed through a statement released by his agent on Thursday that he had privately asked for a trade from the Jets a few months back.
In his statement, Hellebuyck mentioned that he had handled the situation discreetly and respectfully, giving the organization ample time to consider their options. However, with the approaching training camp, he felt it necessary to make his request public, believing that moving on would be the best decision for himself and his family.
Expressing gratitude towards the Winnipeg Jets’ fans for their support throughout his career, Hellebuyck hopes for a swift resolution to the situation. The 33-year-old Michigan native achieved a remarkable milestone by clinching both the league’s MVP and top goalie titles following the 2024-25 NHL season, during which the Jets secured the best record in franchise history.
Jets’ general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, in a subsequent statement, mentioned that there were no updates regarding the star goalie’s future with the team. Cheveldayoff acknowledged Hellebuyck’s desire for a change and praised his significant contributions to the organization over the years. He assured that the team would handle the situation thoughtfully.
Hellebuyck reflected on the Jets drafting him in the fifth round of the NHL draft in 2012, emphasizing his dedication to proving the team’s decision right since then. Notably, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year for his outstanding performance in the Olympic gold-medal game against Canada at the Milano-Cortina Winter Games.
A five-time finalist for the Vezina Trophy, Hellebuyck’s future remains uncertain as discussions about his potential trade continue.
