Keir Starmer has pledged to address the underlying causes of extremism and antisemitism in response to a terrorist assault on the Jewish community in north London.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need to boost funding for the security of Jewish individuals and expressed his intention to promptly visit Golders Green following the “shocking attack.” He also announced plans to convene meetings with law enforcement agencies the next day after an emergency Cobra session held earlier.
Earlier today, two Jewish men, aged 76 and 34, were victims of a terrorist attack in the vicinity. Both individuals are currently in stable condition at a hospital. Jewish leaders have called for stronger measures against anti-Semitic violence following the double stabbing incident at approximately 11:15 am, which has been labeled as a terrorist attack.
Addressing the situation in the evening, Mr. Starmer condemned the attack and extended sympathies to the victims, their families, and the community affected by the incident. He acknowledged the ongoing anxiety within the community due to a series of anti-Semitic incidents and assured close engagement with the affected community, promising a visit at the earliest opportunity.
Furthermore, he disclosed that a Cobra meeting had taken place during which security coordination and enhancements were discussed with key officials in attendance. Mr. Starmer also mentioned consulting with the Community Security Trust to bolster existing funding for enhanced protection measures.
In emphasizing the government’s commitment to security, cohesion, and counter-extremism efforts, the PM highlighted the imperative to address the heightened concerns and vulnerabilities felt by the Jewish community. He stressed the need to ensure the safety and security of the community while tackling the fundamental issues of anti-Semitism and extremism.
Authorities are actively investigating the background and nationality of the assailant involved in the Wednesday attack. The suspect, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, is currently in custody following an assessment at a hospital, according to Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley.
