For decades, a distinctive voice has been a constant presence in McDonald’s advertisements across the United Kingdom, easily recognizable by many. This voice belonged to Dexter Fletcher, the accomplished English actor and director known for his work in films like Rocketman, Eddie the Eagle, and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Fletcher served as the familiar voice of the fast-food giant’s campaigns for a remarkable twenty years.
Recently, McDonald’s fans may have observed a change as Fletcher, aged 60 from London, has been replaced by fellow actor Stephen Graham, aged 52. Graham, renowned for his roles in productions such as This Is England and Netflix’s Adolescence, took over the role in April.
Reports indicate that McDonald’s executives made this significant casting alteration for strategic purposes. Both QSR Media and Campaign Live suggest that the primary reason behind the switch was to establish a more relatable connection with younger British consumers, despite the relatively small age gap of only 8 years between Graham, from Kirkby, Merseyside, and Fletcher.
While aiming to attract a younger demographic, McDonald’s selected Graham due to his widely recognizable voice which appeals to a broad cross-generational audience throughout the UK.
Hannah Pain, the marketing and menu director at McDonald’s UK and Ireland, disclosed that the company is adopting a more contemporary, culture-oriented strategy. Graham was chosen for his unique combination of “cultural credibility” and “everyday warmth” that aligns with authentic, insight-driven customer interactions.
Graham’s voice premiered in a series of nationwide campaigns, featuring advertisements for the McCrispy, the Big Arch, and “Breakfast Done Properly”.
Some fans are only just noticing the change, with one Reddit user inquiring: “Is Stephen Graham doing the Maccy D’s adverts now?”
Not everyone was pleased with the alteration, as one individual remarked: “Bring back Dexter Fletcher! McDonald’s claims ‘to connect with a younger audience’ but Graham is only 8 years younger than Fletcher.”
Another user agreed, stating: “Yeah, it felt a bit strange, he’s definitely ‘the voice’ of Maccys.”
A third user added: “I have always heard his voice on the UK ads. I’ve grown accustomed to it, the warm friendly voice. He embodies the essence of McDonald’s. He’s Mr. McDonald’s! It felt odd when it was noticeably absent.”
Despite the mixed reactions, many are likely to embrace Graham’s presence in the advertisements.
The actor is a highly acclaimed figure in British and international television and film, recognized for his remarkable versatility and compelling, intense performances.
With over 100 acting credits to his name, Graham has appeared in legendary Hollywood productions like Snatch, Gangs of New York, The Irishman, and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as iconic television series including Boardwalk Empire, Line of Duty, Peaky Blinders, and Boiling Point.
Throughout his career, he has garnered numerous prestigious awards for his exceptional performance in the Netflix miniseries Adolescence.
