A man tragically passed away after reportedly being attacked by a group of youngsters, some as young as 12, following a theft incident at a store. Van Viet Truong, a 60-year-old store owner, intervened to assist a colleague who was being robbed in Melbourne, Australia. During the altercation, which occurred last week on Hampshire Road around 2pm, Truong rushed to aid the employee and got involved in a scuffle with the youths. Security footage captured Truong pushing one of the children before being struck in the head. Unfortunately, the subsequent events were not recorded on camera.
According to Victoria Police, Truong sustained severe head injuries after being repeatedly hit and falling to the ground. Despite being taken to the hospital, he passed away on Wednesday. Five young individuals, aged between 12 and 15, have been charged with various offenses including affray, violent disorder, and causing serious injury. One of the accused, a 13-year-old boy, had his charges dropped after further investigations. However, the police are considering elevating the charges in light of Truong’s death.
Magistrate Robyn Hamilton predicted the fatal outcome for Truong, emphasizing the severity of the incident. She indicated that charges against the youths are likely to be upgraded. The tragic incident prompted emotional pleas in court, with one mother tearfully requesting bail for her 12-year-old son. Despite concerns for his well-being, the plea was unsuccessful. Some of the teenagers are due back in court to review their bail arrangements.
Radio host Jacqui Felgate criticized the lack of attention given to the incident, attributing it to a societal normalization of youth crime and leniency in the justice system. She pointed out the unintended consequences of past legislative decisions that have seemingly emboldened young offenders. Victorian Premier Ben Carroll condemned the attack on Truong, labeling it as unacceptable and endorsing stricter penalties for violent crimes.
