Carlos Gu, a prominent figure on the popular show Strictly Come Dancing, has shared insights into his relationship with co-star Amy Dowden, shedding light on the less-than-perfect aspects of their connection. Describing their bond as akin to that of siblings rather than just colleagues, Carlos revealed that they experience both harmony and discord in equal measure. This dynamic was particularly evident when they transitioned from the dance floor to the intense challenges of Celebrity Hunted.
In an interview with Heat Magazine, Carlos reflected on their dynamic, stating, “We have a brother-sister relationship. During the filming of Celebrity Hunted, we had constant disagreements – it felt like we were on the verge of causing each other harm! Amy took the lead while I provided the entertainment, but our bond has only grown stronger.”
As they prepare to embark on a tour together next month, Carlos expressed admiration for his partner, commending Amy’s exceptional dancing skills and inspirational nature. “Amy is not only a phenomenal dancer but also a source of great inspiration,” he remarked.
“She possesses a fighting spirit, which perfectly aligns with the theme of our show, Reborn – a reflection of our past selves and the individuals we are evolving into,” Carlos added.
Both Carlos and Amy have encountered personal hurdles in recent years. Amy has been candid about her health battles, including a challenging fight against grade three breast cancer.
Following her diagnosis in 2023, she underwent rigorous treatments, including chemotherapy and a mastectomy, ultimately receiving confirmation of being cancer-free. Despite ongoing health concerns such as Crohn’s disease, a broken foot, sepsis, and blood clots, Amy shared on Instagram her newfound sense of happiness, strength, and confidence, expressing her desire to return to Strictly this season.
In an interview with The Metro, Amy conveyed her aspirations, saying, “If I am invited back, I aim to reach Blackpool on Strictly as a personal testament to my recovery from cancer. Celebrating my tenth year on the show would be a milestone achievement, paving the way for potential ventures in presenting and perhaps even judging in the future.”
For Carlos, the show’s upcoming tour holds significant significance, symbolizing his relocation from China to the UK to participate in Strictly Come Dancing. This pivotal decision marked the end of his 20-year dance partnership with Susan Sun, with whom he clinched numerous competition victories.
Although their split initially strained their relationship, Carlos and Susan have since reconciled, with Susan extending her congratulations when he triumphed with Karen Carney in securing the Glitterball trophy last season.
Meanwhile, Carlos expressed apprehension regarding the uncertainty surrounding the show’s professional lineup. The BBC has yet to confirm the return of professionals for the upcoming season following the removal of four dancers from the roster.
During a recent appearance on Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast, Carlos voiced his concerns, stating, “While reports have surfaced, the BBC has not provided any official announcements, leaving us in a state of anticipation. The ambiguity of not knowing whether you will continue on the show is
