“Study Questions Effectiveness of Intermittent Fasting Trend”

Published on

A recent study suggests that the scientific support for intermittent fasting may not live up to the hype surrounding this popular diet trend, according to experts. Despite the endorsement of intermittent fasting by various celebrities and politicians for weight management, the research indicates a lack of robust evidence to substantiate its effectiveness.

Intermittent fasting encompasses several methods, including alternate day fasting, time-restricted eating such as the 16:8 diet, and whole-day fasting like the 5:2 diet. A comprehensive Cochrane review analyzed 22 trials involving 1,995 adults from multiple continents, including North America, Europe, China, Australia, and South America.

The review scrutinized various forms of intermittent fasting, such as alternate-day fasting, periodic fasting, and time-restricted eating, comparing them with conventional dietary recommendations. The findings revealed that intermittent fasting may not lead to significant weight loss in overweight or obese adults seeking to shed pounds, as stated by lead author Luis Garegnani from the Universidad Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires Cochrane Associate Centre.

While intermittent fasting could be a viable option for some individuals, the current data does not warrant the widespread enthusiasm observed on social media platforms. Eva Madrid, senior author from Cochrane Evidence Synthesis Unit Iberoamerica, emphasized the need for tailored recommendations by healthcare professionals when advising overweight adults on weight management strategies.

Recent health data from the Health Survey for England highlighted concerning statistics, with 30% of adults classified as obese and 66% either overweight or living with obesity. Furthermore, the report revealed that a significant portion (27%) of adults in England lead sedentary lifestyles, engaging in less than 30 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity per week. Additionally, 48% of adults were found to have elevated cholesterol levels.
