Sydney Sweeney’s New American Eagle Ad Sparks Controversy

Published on

Sydney Sweeney has unveiled a new advertisement for American Eagle following the backlash received for her 2025 Fall campaign, which was criticized for its controversial messaging. In the latest images, the actress, recognized for her roles in The White Lotus, Euphoria, and Anyone But You, is showcased in various outfits including a white shirt with denim shorts and a white tank top paired with embroidered jeans, complemented by her styled blonde hair in loose waves.

The previous Fall campaign, now removed from the brand’s social media, featured Sweeney whispering about genes being passed down and her blue jeans. This drew criticism for being perceived as tone-deaf and possibly linked to eugenics. Critics expressed concerns that the ad sexualized women while supposedly supporting domestic violence awareness, a cause Sweeney actively supports.

While some defended the campaign as harmless, others argued that it inadvertently promoted eugenics, an ideology historically associated with enhancing desirable traits, often related to whiteness. The concept of eugenics, initiated by Sir Francis Galton in the late 19th century, has been condemned for justifying discrimination against marginalized groups and individuals with disabilities, shaping societal beauty standards.

The controversy surrounding the ad sparked mixed reactions on TikTok, with some users interpreting it as perpetuating racism and eugenics. These opinions highlight the ongoing debate on beauty standards in marketing and the inadvertent reinforcement of outdated ideals through marketing strategies.

Despite the negative backlash, sources close to the company revealed that many individuals actually found the ad appealing, with 71% of those surveyed in favor of it. American Eagle addressed the criticism by emphasizing their focus on creating quality products and supporting charitable causes, dismissing the online outrage as not reflective of the majority opinion.

In conclusion, the ad controversy involving Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign has reignited discussions on societal values, marketing ethics, and the critical role of social media in shaping public perceptions.
