A young woman’s employment at a renowned Scottish golf club was abruptly terminated just a quarter of an hour into her first day due to her visible tattoos, despite having disclosed them during her interview process.
Abbie Foote, aged 25, expressed her shock as she was promptly sent home after arriving at work, unaware that her tattoos would pose an issue on her initial day at the club. Following her disappointment, Abbie shared her experience online, garnering significant attention with over 866,000 views and 56,800 likes.
Recounting the incident, Abbie, a retail worker from Carnoustie, Scotland, revealed that despite openly displaying her tattoos on her arms and neck during her final interview, she was informed that her body art did not align with the club’s standards only moments into her shift.
Abbie had previously worked at Carnoustie Golf Links and had even showcased her tattoos during a recent re-interview, receiving her employment contract shortly before her first day. However, her excitement turned to dismay when she was pulled aside by HR and informed of her dismissal due to her visible tattoos, particularly her latest neck tattoo.
Despite attempting to reason with HR and offering to cover her tattoos during work hours, Abbie was devastated by the unexpected turn of events, especially after resigning from her previous job to return to the golf course.
Following her dismissal, Abbie received an email citing an internal error in considering the club’s uniform policy regarding visible tattoos for customer-facing roles, a policy that was not explicitly stated in any written documentation. Despite being offered a week’s wages as compensation, Abbie viewed it as inadequate given the circumstances and the impact on her financial stability.
Abbie’s former colleagues expressed shock and disbelief at the situation, with some accompanying her to seek clarification from management. The club later admitted to an “unwritten” policy change regarding visible tattoos, leading to further confusion and frustration among staff members.
Despite accepting the compensation offered, Abbie remains adamant that the situation was unjust and has raised concerns about the lack of clarity in the club’s policies. Carnoustie Golf Links has been approached for comment on the matter.
