An individual from Austria has admitted guilt in a scheme to target a concert by Taylor Swift in Vienna. The renowned pop artist was set to hold three shows in the Austrian capital in August 2024 as part of her global Eras Tour. However, Austrian authorities foiled an attack planned for one of the concerts, leading to the cancellation of the Austrian dates.
Following the concert cancellations, saddened fans united to exchange friendship bracelets and pay tribute to Taylor. The singer expressed deep disappointment over the cancellations, describing the situation as “devastating.” The accused, a 21-year-old Austrian identified as Beran A, faced charges related to terrorism and involvement in a terrorist group. He, along with another individual named Arda K and a third accomplice, allegedly conspired to carry out coordinated attacks in three countries – Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates – during Ramadan in 2024 in the name of IS. Although the planned attacks were never executed by Beran A and Arda K, a third suspect, Hasan E, reportedly assaulted a security guard at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, leading to his arrest and current detention awaiting trial in Saudi Arabia.
Beran A and Arda K did not proceed with their intended actions in Turkey and the UAE. Beran A returned to Vienna and purportedly started devising a plan to target Taylor’s concert. The alleged plot involved attacking attendees outside Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, which can hold around 65,000 people, using knives or homemade explosives, with the aim of causing harm to as many individuals as possible.
In response to the concert cancellations, Taylor expressed her sorrow, mentioning her feelings of fear and guilt, given the disappointment faced by fans who had planned to attend the shows. Subsequently, Taylor resumed her tour with performances in London, where she commenced her show with words of unity and gratitude towards the audience.
