A teacher facing murder charges in the death of an adopted infant asserted his innocence, denying any harm or sexual abuse towards the child. Jamie Varley, 37, emotionally refuted accusations of killing 13-month-old Preston Davey and capturing photos or videos for malicious purposes. Varley, along with his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, is accused of subjecting the baby to various forms of abuse, which they both deny.
During his testimony at Preston Crown Court, Varley expressed his emotions as he defended himself for the first time since the trial began. He adamantly denied causing any harm to Preston and refuted allegations of sexual assault or mistreatment. Varley clarified that Preston, who had been adopted by the couple, joined their household in Blackpool in April 2023.
Varley, a former teacher with dyslexia, shared insights into his relationship with Preston and the challenges they faced during the early stages of adoption. He emphasized his love for the child and the significant impact of becoming a parent. Varley explained certain incidents, such as a text message to his sister, as misunderstood expressions and highlighted his genuine care for Preston’s well-being.
The court also scrutinized photos and injuries linked to Preston, including bruises and marks, which Varley attributed to the child’s everyday activities. He vehemently denied any intentional harm or misconduct towards the infant. Varley clarified contentious images, such as those showing Preston in unusual sleeping positions, as innocent moments captured without malicious intent.
Tragically, Preston passed away in July 2023, triggering investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death. The post-mortem report revealed severe injuries consistent with abuse, leading to accusations of murder, assault, and other criminal charges against Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley. Both defendants maintain their innocence as the trial proceeds.
