Team GB has secured its first victory at the Winter Olympics as Matt Weston claimed the gold medal in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, aged 28, had high expectations going into the competition in Milano Cortina and did not disappoint with a strong performance across all heats.

After leading following the first two heats with times of 56.21 and 55.88, Weston continued to impress with a total time of 1:52.09 going into the second day. He maintained his lead by clocking a notable time of 55.63 in the third heat. Weston’s final run was exceptional, setting a track record time of 55.61, which led to an emotional celebration with teammate Marcus Wyatt and the Team GB coaching staff.

For Weston, this victory marked a significant improvement from his 15th place finish in the previous Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, Wyatt also had a decent performance on the second day but settled for seventh place with a total time of 3:45.77.

Following his win, Weston expressed his gratitude and dedication to achieving this milestone, acknowledging the sacrifices made by his loved ones for his success. This triumph not only placed Team GB on the Winter Olympics medal table but also saw German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer secure the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Commenting on Weston’s performance, former Olympic champion Lizzie Yarnold highlighted the intense pressure and split-second decisions faced by skeleton athletes. Team GB’s chef de mission, Eve Muirhead, praised Weston for his composure under pressure and exceptional performance, emphasizing the dedication and support behind his success.
