“Teen Blackmail Victim Champions Child Protection Tech”

Published on

A young woman, who fell victim to blackmail at the age of 13 after being coerced into sending an explicit photo, is advocating for mandatory child protection software on mobile devices. Roxy Longworth faced severe mental health challenges in her teenage years when the image was circulated among her peers, causing her friends to ostracize her and subjecting her to relentless abuse. Struggling with guilt and shame, she resorted to self-harm and was even put on suicide watch. Now, a decade later, Roxy is speaking out, emphasizing that many young individuals are enduring similar distress due to the increasing pressure to share nude photos.

She has urged the government to enforce the implementation of new technology by phone manufacturers to block children from capturing, sharing, or receiving explicit content. Despite the availability of such software, there is currently no legal mandate for its inclusion on children’s devices. This plea follows criticism from former Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips regarding the government’s sluggish approach in compelling companies to adopt these protective measures. In an interview, Roxy expressed gratitude for still being alive but highlighted the crucial role technology could play in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

Roxy’s harrowing experience began with a 17-year-old classmate pressuring her to send intimate photos under the threat of social ostracism. Despite her initial refusal, she eventually succumbed to the coercion, only to have her trust shattered when the image was shared without her consent. Reflecting on the aftermath, Roxy revealed the deep emotional turmoil that ensued, leading to self-destructive behaviors and a psychiatric hospitalization.

Driven by a desire to assist others facing similar challenges, Roxy and her mother authored a poignant biography, “When You Lose It,” recounting her journey. The book resonated with numerous individuals who reached out to share their own experiences of exploitation and abuse. Roxy emphasized the normalization of soliciting and sending explicit images among adolescents, with children as young as 11 or 12 reporting similar encounters. Government officials are contemplating legislation to mandate AI technology on devices to prevent the transmission of such harmful content.

The call for action has intensified, with advocates pushing for accountability among adults, organizations, and tech companies to prioritize child safety in digital environments. Rhiannon-Faye McDonald, a survivor of technology-facilitated child sexual abuse, stressed the need for proactive measures to mitigate risks and protect vulnerable individuals. As pressure mounts on the government to address these issues, the urgency to implement safeguards and hold offenders accountable has become paramount.
