Teenager’s Deadly Crash: Fled Scene, Ordered Pizza

Published on

An 18-year-old teenager, Sonny Horsfall, crashed his newly acquired black Audi A4 into an 84-year-old man on West Dyke Road in Redcar, North Yorkshire. Following the incident, Horsfall texted a friend confessing, “I’ve killed someone,” before fleeing the scene.

The collision occurred at 10:23 pm when Horsfall lost control of the vehicle, causing it to hit a tree after flying over a grass patch, striking the elderly man who was walking along a footpath. Despite the victim being thrown into the air, Horsfall proceeded to order a pizza shortly after the crash.

Witnesses described the aftermath of the crash, noting the damaged state of the Audi with its front wheel hanging off, emitting orange sparks, smashed windscreen, and bonnet damage. An ambulance was called by a neighbor who discovered the injured victim lying on the grass.

Horsfall, who was already disqualified from driving, had purchased the Audi for £250 earlier that evening and later messaged his friend admitting to losing control of the vehicle and hitting someone. He expressed fear of the consequences, stating, “I think I killed him.”

The teenager had traveled over 30 miles to Redcar that night, recording Snapchat videos along the way, including reckless driving behaviors. After the crash, he messaged another friend on Snapchat, confessing to the accident and his subsequent escape from the scene.

Following his arrest in Malton the next day, Horsfall was brought before court, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Despite his defense counsel citing his remorse and underlying issues, Horsfall was sentenced to three years in prison and a four-year driving disqualification.

The victim of the crash survived but sustained severe injuries requiring surgery and rehabilitation to regain mobility. The elderly man expressed the loss of independence and dignity following the incident, emphasizing the impact on his daily life and well-being.

Judge Christopher Knox condemned Horsfall’s actions as “wicked and stupid,” highlighting the harm caused to the victim. Detectives involved in the case emphasized the gravity of reckless driving behaviors and the importance of road safety for public protection.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of irresponsible driving, with authorities urging the public to respect road rules and prioritize safety while behind the wheel.
