The creators of the popular sitcom “The Office” are marking its 25th anniversary in different ways. Ricky Gervais, who portrayed the lead character David Brent, showcased the character’s top 25 moments in a special on his YouTube channel, noticeably omitting any mention of his co-writer Stephen Merchant.
Meanwhile, actors Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook, who starred in “The Office,” shared fond memories of working on the show with both Gervais and Merchant in a 30-minute BBC special. Merchant later shared an interview clip on Instagram discussing their collaborative work on the iconic comedy.
Reflecting on their partnership, Merchant emphasized the collaborative effort behind their projects, including “The Office,” which they developed together through joint writing sessions and improvisation.
Although Gervais and Merchant were once close collaborators, having worked on various projects together, including “The Office,” they have since drifted apart. Gervais, who now exclusively streams his content on Netflix, focused his 25-year celebration on David Brent, highlighting memorable moments from the show.
Revisiting one of the show’s iconic scenes, Gervais recalled the challenges and risks involved in filming the famous dance sequence, which he described as a pivotal moment in his career. Additionally, he discussed the inspiration behind certain scenes, including a job interview experience that became the series’ opening scene.
In light of the anniversary, Gervais also shared behind-the-scenes anecdotes, such as his efforts to make his co-stars laugh during filming. Despite their creative success, Gervais and Merchant have evolved in separate directions, maintaining a distant relationship in recent years.
