Plans have been unveiled to erect a life-sized statue in Liverpool’s Pride Quarter in honor of James Lee Williams, also known as The Vivienne. James, who gained fame as the inaugural winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2019, passed away in January 2025 at the age of 32 due to struggles with a ketamine addiction.
The family of James established the House of The Vivienne CIC, a support group aiding individuals battling drug and alcohol addiction, as a tribute to the memory of the drag artist. The organization has now disclosed intentions to commission the statue at the entrance to Liverpool’s Pride Quarter, situated at the intersection of Victoria Street and Stanley Street.
Chanel Williams, James’ sister and the director of House of The Vivienne CIC, commented, “A permanent statue in the Pride Quarter seems the fitting way to ensure that nobody forgets, and to reassure anyone facing challenges that they are not alone.”
“This was James’ belief, and it is a message we will continue to uphold. James devoted himself to Liverpool, and in return, the city embraced and supported his transformation into The Vivienne.”
Leading the initiative is John Hyland, who remarked, “The Vivienne embodied the essence of the Pride Quarter, making every visitor feel accepted and valued, a sentiment that persisted even as their stardom soared.”
“This statue symbolizes Liverpool’s acknowledgment of what the LGBTQ+ community already recognizes. Moreover, it signifies the commencement of a broader initiative. The Pride Quarter deserves investment, attention, and a promising future, and this statue serves as the initial declaration that it will receive both.”
The Vivienne rose to prominence in 2015 as the UK Drag Ambassador for RuPaul’s Drag Race, subsequently triumphing in the UK series in 2019 and participating in the All-Stars series in 2022.
Beyond their television success, The Vivienne garnered a new following after competing on Dancing On Ice in March 2023, securing the third position. In June 2023, they were honored with the Scene of the Year award at the 2023 British Soap Awards.
Apart from their drag performances and television appearances, The Vivienne showcased their talent by portraying The Wicked Witch of the West in the 2011 production of The Wizard of Oz, a role they reprised in London’s West End. Additionally, they made a guest appearance on Emmerdale in June 2021.
