Titanic Theme Premonition Leads Ship’s Dancer to Heroic Rescue

Published on

On a fateful night in January 2012, Rose Metcalf, a 23-year-old ship’s dancer on the Costa Concordia cruise liner, was halted by the sound of three violinists performing the iconic Titanic theme, “My Heart Will Go On.” Feeling uneasy about the choice of music, she warned her companion, a Peruvian man she was dating, of the bad omen it symbolized. Tragically, hours later, one of the violinists met a grim fate among the 31 individuals who lost their lives when the ship collided with rocks near Italy’s Giglio Island, causing it to capsize.

Rose, originally from Bournemouth, is prominently featured in the top-rated Netflix series, “Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea,” recounting her heroic actions in aiding 400 individuals to safety during the disaster. Recollecting the harrowing moment of impact, she described the chaotic scenes as the vessel began to shudder violently, likening the experience to an earthquake with sounds of distress echoing throughout the ship.

Now 37, Rose vividly remembers the panic and lack of guidance among passengers and crew as they scrambled for life jackets and lifeboats. She criticized the inadequate safety training provided onboard the Costa Concordia, emphasizing the gravity of the situation as the ship started to list towards disaster. Despite the overwhelming chaos, Rose demonstrated immense courage and leadership by organizing a human chain to assist people in navigating the dangerously tilted corridors towards safety.

As the situation grew increasingly dire, Rose’s quick thinking and resourcefulness came into play as she devised a plan to use a broken torch to signal for help. Her perseverance led to the eventual rescue of herself and four others stranded onboard. Reflecting on the traumatic aftermath of the incident, Rose shared her struggles with PTSD and survivor’s guilt, highlighting the lack of support and compensation from the ship’s owners for the survivors.

Having embarked on a journey of healing and advocacy, Rose has channeled her resilience into empowering others by providing specialized therapy and promoting maritime safety initiatives. Despite the lingering trauma, she has found purpose in her work as a business coach and aims to inspire hope through her transformative experiences. Expressing her commitment to preventing future tragedies, Rose continues to advocate for stricter safety measures within the maritime industry and remains a beacon of resilience and empowerment for those she assists.
