Top-seeded Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury that has kept him out of competition since his recent Wimbledon victory. The Italian tennis star, aged 25, claimed his second consecutive Wimbledon title by defeating Alexander Zverev before opting out of the lead-up hard-court events in Montreal and Cincinnati.

In a statement released on Friday, Sinner expressed regret over his inability to participate in the US Open main draw, set to commence on August 30. Despite concerted efforts by his team and medical experts, he acknowledged the necessity of further recovery time for his right knee problem, following recent training sessions in Monte Carlo.

Expressing disappointment at missing the chance to compete in New York, a city he holds dear, Sinner highlighted his anticipation of the vibrant atmosphere and passionate fan support at the renowned tournament. The reigning 2024 U.S. Open champion faced defeat at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s final, with Alcaraz confirming his readiness to return to action after a hiatus due to a right wrist injury.

The intense rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a focal point in men’s tennis, culminating in their showdowns in the last three Grand Slam finals of 2025. Alcaraz emerged victorious in their most recent encounter at the US Open, ending Sinner’s title reign following his previous triumph over Taylor Fritz in 2024.
