“Tourist Overcrowding Surges at Iconic Landmarks”

Published on

Vacations offer an opportunity to explore new cultures, witness iconic landmarks, and indulge in exotic cuisine. However, the experience can be dampened when throngs of other tourists are present.

Following a prolonged period of restricted travel due to the global health crisis, a surge in tourism has been observed as eager travelers flock to popular destinations, leading to concerns of overcrowding.

A recent study by MoneyTransfers.com in 2023 identified Edinburgh Castle in the UK as the most overcrowded landmark globally. The research also highlighted various congested destinations around the world.

At the forefront of overcrowded tourist spots is Phuket, Thailand, with an astonishing ratio of 118 tourists for every local resident. Renowned for its pristine beaches, Phuket boasts popular shores like Kata and Karon, which are globally acclaimed.

The allure of Phuket’s picturesque landscapes attracts a significant influx of visitors, resulting in overcrowded beaches, particularly during peak seasons. Thailand’s Pattaya and Krabi also secured spots as the second and third most congested destinations globally.

Thailand dominates the top 10 list of overcrowded destinations, with Greece and Turkey following closely. Heraklion in Greece ranks seventh, with a tourist-to-resident ratio of 22, while Venice, Italy, stands at 21 tourists per resident.

Venice recently implemented a controversial tourist fee under the leadership of Mayor Simone Venturini. The historic city introduced an entry charge of €5 during peak periods from April to July in 2024, later increasing to €10 for last-minute visitors.

The levy aims to mitigate overcrowding and discourage visits during peak times, as Venice attracts around 30 million tourists annually.

Mayor Venturini is proposing a further increase in the entry fee to €50, while Rhodes, Greece, and Miami, USA, also feature on the list of overcrowded destinations with ratios of over 20 and 18 tourists per resident, respectively.
