At least 15 individuals have lost their lives and several others have sustained injuries following a tragic truck collision. The incident occurred early Monday on a major highway in central Bangladesh when a truck, transporting iron rods and additional passengers, overturned. According to local authorities, the driver lost control of the vehicle around 5 a.m. in the Soratoil area of Tangail district, located 83 kilometers (52 miles) northwest of Dhaka, the nation’s capital.
The truck, carrying both hitchhiking passengers and iron rods, was en route from Dhaka to the northern region as people traveled for the upcoming Islamic festival Eid al-Adha. Regrettably, the truck overturned, resulting in the death of 15 individuals at the scene. The identities of those who perished or were injured, crushed under the weight of the rods and wheels, have not been confirmed yet.
The tragic accident took place in the Jogarchar area on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway in the upazila. Despite the truck being on its side, it did not appear to have sustained significant damage in the collision. Most of the passengers were identified as day laborers on their way to celebrate the festival with their families.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing noises and immediately rushed to the scene to rescue trapped passengers. Tragically, road accidents claim thousands of lives annually in Bangladesh due to inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations, poor road conditions, and inexperienced driving.
