“Trespassers Risk Lives Amid UK Water Fatality Spike”

Despite a clear warning from the trust about the extreme danger, individuals have been trespassing into a quarried area that had been sealed off after two young men lost their lives more than ten years ago.

A spokesperson disclosed that there have been repeated breaches of the safety barriers, with reports of people even swimming in the quarry during the recent Bank Holiday weekend. This concerning behavior coincided with a tragic spike in water-related fatalities, with 17 deaths recorded across the UK during the latest heatwave, including a 13-year-old girl and a 72-year-old woman.

Deborah Fox, the CEO of Malvern Hills Trust, expressed dismay that despite the somber history of the abandoned Gullet Quarry in Worcestershire, individuals were still utilizing its lake to cool off amidst the soaring temperatures.

Fox emphasized the critical nature of heeding warnings against swimming in quarries, highlighting the significant risks involved in such activities. The site had been closed for an extended period following the tragic deaths of two men, Russell O’Neill, 17, and Justas Juzenas, 22, who drowned in the quarry lake in 2013.

Reiterating the peril of the quarry lake, Fox underscored the potentially fatal consequences of cold water shock, which can incapacitate even strong swimmers, leading to drowning. Authorities like the UK Health Security Agency and the National Fire Chiefs Council have issued alerts regarding the dangers of cold water shock and drowning, particularly during warm weather spells.

The recent heatwave in the UK saw a distressing tally of 17 fatalities from water-related incidents. Among the casualties was a 13-year-old girl who tragically went missing in the River Wharfe in Yorkshire. Additionally, a woman in her 60s lost her life while attempting to rescue her dog in Thornton-Cleveleys.

The youngest victim identified in the recent water-related incidents was Junior Slater, a 12-year-old boy who encountered difficulties in the River Ribble, according to Lancashire Police. Junior’s family, in a heartfelt tribute, described him as their beloved “little blue-eyed boy,” expressing profound grief over his untimely passing.
