“U.S. Ready to Act on Tariff Threats, Canada Trade Talks Intensify”

Published on

The U.S. trade representative, Jamieson Greer, stated that the Trump administration is prepared to take action against any country, including Canada, that retaliates in response to the latest tariff threats. Greer emphasized that the trade measures are aimed at safeguarding domestic supply chains rather than targeting Canada specifically. He noted that ongoing trade discussions with Canada have been constructive, but the U.S. is firm on its stance against retaliatory actions.

Trump’s proposed 50 per cent tariffs on numerous Canadian goods, set to take effect on August 19, have intensified trade negotiations between the two countries. Greer mentioned that while the Canadians seem inclined towards a more conciliatory approach, the U.S. is focused on executing President Trump’s trade policies. Discussions have also revolved around addressing existing tariffs on sectors like autos and steel.

Industry insiders familiar with the talks have highlighted the significance of the August 19 deadline, indicating that Canada may not continue negotiations if the tariffs are imposed. Greer mentioned that options will be presented to both Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney before the deadline. The U.S. has proposed adjustments to some sectoral tariffs, although not meeting Canada’s desired level of reduction.

Trump’s tariff threats, citing concerns over provincial liquor bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs, have prompted Canada to consider concessions on these issues. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal and urged the Canadian government to stand firm on dairy negotiations. Greer underscored that the U.S. has multiple trade concerns with Canada, particularly highlighting alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs.

Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, refuted Greer’s characterization of Canada’s actions, stating that Canada is merely responding to unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S. McKenna emphasized the importance of defending against unjust trade practices and criticized the notion of “might is right” in international trade relations.
