Uganda Denies Existence of New Ebola Centers

Published on

The government of Uganda has stated that they have no knowledge of any newly established Ebola treatment facilities in their country, contradicting claims made by the White House under Donald Trump’s administration. The US Department of State recently announced funding for up to 50 treatment clinics in Ebola-affected areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, where the current outbreak has resulted in 131 deaths and over 530 infections.

Despite the US announcement, the Ugandan Ministry of Health refuted the existence of any new treatment centers and reassured the public that the country remains safe. They clarified that the two reported Ebola cases in Uganda were individuals who had traveled from the DR Congo and not locally transmitted cases.

In a statement on social media, the Ministry of Health emphasized that they were not involved in the establishment of the mentioned treatment centers and were unaware of their locations within the country. They reiterated that Uganda had only recorded two imported Ebola cases, one of which was fatal, while the other patient was responding well to treatment.

Questions have arisen regarding the accuracy of the initial statement regarding foreign assistance, which included funding for treatment clinics in the affected regions. The US government later confirmed its commitment to supporting the response by setting up clinics for clinical care and containment in the Ebola-affected areas.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has imposed restrictions on travelers who have recently visited the DR Congo or Uganda from entering the US, except through Washington Dulles International Airport for enhanced screening. This measure led to the diversion of an Air France flight to Montreal after a passenger from the Congo boarded the flight in Paris mistakenly due to the restrictions.

Air France stated that the passenger was denied entry into the US due to regulations requiring travelers from certain countries, including the Congo, to enter only through Washington DC.
