“UK Braces for Record-Breaking Bank Holiday Heatwave”

Published on

The Met Office has issued guidance on staying cool as it predicts potentially record-breaking temperatures for this upcoming Bank Holiday weekend in May.

The national weather agency anticipates that various regions will encounter official heatwave conditions from Saturday to Monday, with temperatures reaching up to 33C in certain UK areas on Monday. Saturday is expected to bring highs of 30C, while Sunday could see temperatures of 32C, according to the Met Office.

Given the forecast, individuals in the UK will likely seek ways to keep themselves and their homes cool during the extended weekend. The Met Office has provided a list of tips for those opting to stay indoors to avoid the heat, such as closing curtains in rooms exposed to sunlight.

Steve Kocher, the Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, mentioned that temperatures are set to rise over the weekend, particularly in southern regions where temperatures of 30C on Saturday and 32C on Sunday are probable. The peak temperatures are forecasted for Monday, with southern England and the Midlands potentially experiencing 33C heat.

Kocher also indicated that it is highly probable that the UK’s May and Spring temperature records will be broken over the Bank Holiday weekend. The current record temperature stands at 32.8C.

The anticipated hot weather is likely to trigger an official heatwave, which occurs when temperatures surpass the heatwave threshold for three consecutive days. This threshold varies from 25C to 28C across different counties, and the expected temperatures this weekend will exceed it.

The Met Office forecasts that heatwave conditions will likely be met in parts of the south-east on Sunday, with the potential to extend to central and western England as well as parts of Wales.

Despite the expected heat, not all regions will experience scorching temperatures. Mr. Kocher noted that Northern Ireland and western Scotland may see more cloud cover and showers over the weekend. Additionally, due to relatively low sea surface temperatures, areas near western coasts could experience low cloud and sea fog.
