Britons may experience multiple heatwaves in the upcoming months, with a “three-month summer sizzler” anticipated. The UK has already entered its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to reach 35C this week. The Met Office has issued warnings of prolonged sunshine and light winds in many southern regions, possibly surpassing the record high temperature of 40.3C in the coming weeks.
Senior meteorologist Jim Dale from British Weather Services explained that ongoing climate change and the influence of a strong El Niño phenomenon this year will significantly affect local weather conditions. Dale suggested that heatwaves are likely to persist through July, possibly extending into early August and even September due to specific atmospheric conditions.
On a recent occasion, the mercury climbed to 34C in Teddington, southwest London, and further increases are anticipated, with the East of England expected to experience the highest temperatures later in the week. The Met Office confirmed that the Southeast of England has officially met the heatwave criteria, with temperatures consistently above 28C for three consecutive days.
As temperatures continue to rise nationwide, more regions are projected to reach their respective heatwave thresholds, prompting cautionary advice from Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates regarding high UV levels and extreme heat. Pollen levels are also expected to remain very high across the UK, with hayfever sufferers advised to take extra precautions, including frequent showers to reduce pollen exposure.
Overall, the forecast indicates a prolonged period of hot weather ahead for the UK, with experts urging the public to stay informed and take necessary measures to stay safe during the ongoing heatwaves.
