The UK’s commando forces are about to receive a substantial £500 million increase as part of adjustments to the long-overdue defense investment strategy. This boost will see high-speed boats and strike drones allocated to the elite unit, with a particular emphasis on operations in the High North region, including the Arctic Circle, in response to heightened Russian presence.

Recent developments indicate that Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis has successfully secured an additional £1 billion for the defense investment plan (Dip), supplementing the initial £13.5 billion offer that led to the resignation of his predecessor, John Healey. The Dip, originally scheduled for release last year, faced delays due to internal disagreements within the government regarding the required military funding.

The revised focus under Mr. Jarvis’s leadership aims to prioritize equipping frontline troops with necessary gear. This will include funding for new high-speed commando insertion craft for covert troop transport, potentially facilitating operations such as intercepting Russian shadow fleet tankers. Additionally, approximately £100 million will be directed towards innovative technologies like unmanned vessels, advanced communications systems, and strike drones.

Mr. Jarvis expressed satisfaction with the recent progress but emphasized the ongoing efforts to ensure accuracy and effectiveness before the anticipated publication before July 7. He stated, “I’ve been diligently working to ensure we have the right resources and capabilities. My priority is to equip our frontline forces with the latest tools to carry out their crucial duties in an increasingly hazardous global environment.”
