Former SNP chief executive, Peter Murrell, has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for embezzling over £400,000 from the party to support his extravagant lifestyle. Murrell admitted to using SNP funds for luxury purchases, such as a £124,000 motorhome, expensive watches, fountain pens, and other items. He also manipulated financial records and created false invoices to conceal his actions.
During his sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh, Murrell was told by Lord Young that his guilty plea had reduced his sentence from seven years. The judge emphasized that the punishment aimed to deter other senior officials from abusing their positions for personal gain. Murrell’s attempt to cover up his misdeeds by mislabeling purchases in the party’s financial system was also highlighted.
Court documents revealed that Murrell used SNP money for various personal expenses, including a luxury car and lower-cost items like hand cream and takeaway food. His defense lawyer stated that Murrell could repay the embezzled amount in full.
Murrell’s arrest in 2023 as part of a police investigation into the SNP’s finances led to his subsequent charges in 2024. His estranged wife, Nicola Sturgeon, expressed shock and betrayal over his actions, affirming her lack of involvement or knowledge in his misuse of party funds. Sturgeon emphasized her innocence in the matter following a thorough investigation.
Once a prominent couple in UK politics, Murrell and Sturgeon faced public scrutiny over the scandal. The revelation of Murrell’s misconduct deeply impacted the SNP, with party leader John Swinney issuing apologies for the breach of trust and betrayal by Murrell, who had served as the party’s chief executive for over two decades.
