UK Economy Dips Amid Middle East Conflict

Published on

Chancellor Rachel Reeves attributed the downturn in the UK economy in April to the repercussions of the Middle East conflict. According to the Office for National Statistics, the country’s gross domestic product shrank by 0.1%, a stark contrast to the growth seen in the previous months.

Reeves emphasized that prior to the Middle East crisis, the economy was performing above expectations with decreasing inflation. She highlighted the resilience of the economic strategy in place, noting positive revisions by both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The decline was primarily driven by a decrease in services by 0.2%, although construction saw a slight increase of 0.1% and manufacturing grew by 0.4%. The service sector was notably impacted by a drop in arts, entertainment, and recreation output due to the cancellation of sporting events in the Middle East.

The ongoing Iran conflict continues to affect various sectors, as evidenced by recent retail data showing a significant decline in sales. The Bank of England is anticipated to maintain its base rate at 3.75% during its upcoming Monetary Policy Committee meeting.

Economists project a gradual slowdown in growth throughout the rest of 2026 following a strong start to the year. Political figures and experts have expressed concerns about the economic repercussions of the war and called for measures to support households and businesses facing financial pressures.

Analysts predict a slowdown in growth over the coming quarters, with some warning of the possibility of the UK entering a recession if challenges persist. The current economic landscape is characterized by rising household costs, job market uncertainties, and geopolitical tensions impacting investment decisions.
