After experiencing the third heatwave of the year, the UK is bracing for another surge in temperatures above 30C, potentially marking the fourth heatwave. The current heatwave is set to continue with temperatures exceeding 30C in southern regions until the weekend.
Meteorologists from the Met Office predict a decrease in temperatures over the weekend, with highs of 26C and 24C expected in southern and northern areas, respectively, by Sunday. This drop in temperatures may signal the conclusion of the ongoing heatwave.
Despite the temporary relief, weather models indicate a rapid return to hot weather. The GFS model forecasts temperatures rising back into the 30s next week, with highs of 30C and 31C in various parts of England, including eastern, western, and southern regions.
Looking ahead to the following week, weather maps suggest even hotter conditions. Potential highs of 32C in southern and south-eastern regions, with temperatures reaching 31C in western areas, are anticipated for Friday. The GFS model indicates a significant warming trend for the upcoming Saturday, with potential highs of 35C in southern and south-eastern England and temperatures reaching 33C to 34C across central areas. Northern regions like Yorkshire and Wales could also experience highs of up to 32C and 30C, respectively.
Temperature anomaly maps indicate a heatwave scenario for Saturday next week, with large portions of England and Wales expected to experience temperatures well above the seasonal average, while Northern Ireland and Scotland may see below-average temperatures.
The GFS model maps highlight that 17 counties in England could witness temperatures surpassing 34C next week. David Hayter, the Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, noted the continuation of high temperatures exceeding 30C in various UK locations and the likelihood of some areas maintaining heatwave conditions in the coming days.
Although a temporary cool-off is expected this weekend, the weather is likely to turn very warm in southern regions afterwards, with a chance of thunderstorms towards the end of next week.
