“UK Heatwave: Amber Alert Extended, Records Broken”

Published on

An amber health alert has been extended for several regions in the UK as temperatures are expected to reach 35C, potentially marking the hottest May day on record. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns of a heightened risk of fatalities, especially among individuals aged 65 and above or with underlying health conditions, due to the extreme heat. Health and social care services are also likely to face significant strain.

Record-breaking temperatures were observed at Kew Gardens in southwest London, where the mercury soared to 34.8C, marking the hottest spring temperature ever recorded in the UK. The amber alerts for the South West, South East, London, East and West Midlands, and the East of England have been prolonged until Thursday, May 28, along with yellow alerts for the North West and North East.

Vulnerable groups, such as older adults, are advised to take precautions as their bodies may struggle to regulate temperature effectively. Age UK recommends staying indoors during the peak heat hours between 11am and 3pm, as well as taking regular cold baths or showers to stay cool.

Forecasts suggest that temperatures could reach 35C or even 36C in parts of southern England and Wales today, potentially surpassing the current record. Thunderstorm warnings have been issued for various regions, including the South West, West Midlands, East Midlands, and East of England, with expected lightning, hail, and gusty winds, along with the possibility of heavy rainfall to alleviate the heat.

The UK experienced a “tropical night” as temperatures did not drop below 20C in some areas overnight, setting a new record for the warmest minimum temperature in May. The Met Office anticipates that the exceptional heatwave will persist throughout the week, with more “tropical nights” likely.

Met Office chief forecaster Andy Page highlighted the ongoing heatwave, stating that the warmest May night on record may be surpassed again, with the potential for more “tropical nights” in southern England and Wales.
