“UK Heatwave Disrupts Train Services: EMR Issues Travel Advisory”

Published on

Due to the anticipated third heatwave in the UK this summer with temperatures potentially exceeding 35C, certain train services will be disrupted. East Midlands Railway (EMR) has advised passengers to travel only if necessary, as excessive heat may affect train operations. The Met Office forecasts temperatures in the mid-30s in various regions.

EMR suggests traveling before noon to avoid peak temperatures and potential disruptions. Specific routes, such as regional services between Nottingham and Worksop, and Nottingham and Leicester, will be suspended from Wednesday noon to minimize the impact of extreme heat on train tracks. Additionally, some trains will operate at reduced speeds as a precautionary measure for safety.

High temperatures can lead to rail buckling, sagging overhead wires, and lineside fires. Steel rails can surpass 50C when the air temperature hits 30C. Philippa Cresswell, EMR’s customer experience director, emphasized the need for temporary service adjustments to ensure safe railway operations during the hot weather.

EMR is continuously evaluating its plans for Thursday and Friday, advising passengers to stay updated on any changes before traveling. Customers are encouraged to check for travel updates and plan their journeys accordingly to minimize inconvenience.
