In a significant move announced today by the government, vapes may soon be packaged plainly and sold discreetly, following a crackdown on their visibility in stores. Health Secretary James Murray shared that e-cigarettes are set to be treated similarly to traditional cigarettes, with plans to push them out of public view in shops throughout the UK, in collaboration with devolved administrations.
Furthermore, the proposal includes placing cigarette papers and cigars in plain packaging, along with the removal of all tobacco product displays from duty-free areas and airports. Mr. Murray, writing in the Mirror, emphasized the aim to address youth vaping by introducing plain packaging, simple flavor names, and less conspicuous device designs.
The government’s latest initiative follows the passage of the Tobacco and Vapes Act earlier this year, granting authorities extensive powers to phase out tobacco use among younger generations, with annual increases in age restrictions. This recent announcement affirms the government’s strategy to combat youth vaping using these powers.
Statistics show that around one million 11–17-year-olds in Great Britain experimented with vaping in 2025, with colorful packaging, prominent displays, and sweet flavors being identified as key attractions for young individuals. To address this, a consultation has been launched by the UK government and devolved administrations, proposing white packaging and strict limitations on text, imagery, branding, and product information for vape products.
Mr. Murray emphasized the concerns of parents regarding the marketing tactics enticing children into vaping, stressing the importance of keeping vapes out of reach of minors and refraining from targeting them. While acknowledging the potential benefit of vapes for adults seeking to quit smoking, he underscored the need to prevent their use by young individuals and the need for responsible marketing practices.
Professor Steve Turner from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health expressed apprehension over the marketing strategies employed by tobacco and vaping companies to influence future generations, advocating for robust regulations to safeguard children from the risks associated with nicotine addiction.
