“UK Prepares for Record-Breaking Heatwave: Impact on Internet Speeds”

Published on

After experiencing a brief period of hot weather recently, the UK is bracing for another round of high temperatures, with forecasts indicating that Wednesday could see the mercury rise above 37°C. If this occurs, it would mark a new record-breaking day. While the sunny weather is perfect for outdoor activities like beach outings, barbecues, and picnics in the park, the extreme heat may pose challenges for a crucial aspect of modern life — your broadband connection. Surprisingly, the sun can actually impact your internet speed.

So, why does hot weather affect internet performance, and how can you ensure your Wi-Fi remains stable?

The root of the issue lies with the router, the small device responsible for keeping your home connected. Similar to other electronic gadgets such as smartphones and laptops, routers can experience performance issues when exposed to excessive heat. High temperatures can lead to slowdowns in operation and, in severe cases, may even cause the router to shut down.

If you’ve ever left your phone in direct sunlight, you’ve likely encountered warning messages due to overheating. Routers can face similar challenges in hot conditions.

Virgin Media, a prominent UK internet provider, highlighted the risks associated with router overheating, stating, “Although we rigorously test our Hubs at various temperatures, they perform best when shielded from harsh sunlight, much like your phone or laptop.”

Placing your router in a warm room alone is usually not problematic since most modern routers are designed to handle typical summer heat levels. However, positioning your router on a windowsill or in direct sunlight can push it beyond its optimal operating range. Think of it as safeguarding your body from sunburn by seeking shade when necessary.

When a router overheats, broadband speeds may decrease, and the device might temporarily shut down until it cools off.

To prevent such issues, the initial step is to relocate the router away from direct sunlight. Additionally, where you place the router matters in other ways too. Concealing your router in a cupboard or enclosed space may seem neat, but it can hinder proper ventilation, leading to reduced Wi-Fi performance.

Virgin Media suggests, “Strategic router placement can enhance Wi-Fi coverage.”

For optimal connectivity, position your router in an open area, elevated off the ground, and centrally located within your home. Furthermore, keep it away from potential sources of interference such as cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.

Another factor to consider is avoiding proximity to a fish tank, as the water can disrupt Wi-Fi signals, hindering connectivity throughout your home.

By implementing these simple adjustments, you can safeguard your broadband connection and ensure smooth internet operation, even during periods of extreme heat.
