UK Proposes £10,000 Fee for Asylum Seekers

Published on

The UK government has proposed a new policy that would require asylum seekers to pay £10,000 for their accommodation expenses. This move, spearheaded by Shabana Mahmood, Home Secretary, aims to introduce a standard fee to cover housing costs and support services while asylum claims are processed. The fee must be repaid before full settlement rights can be granted.

Critics have labeled the initiative as “performative cruelty,” arguing that burdening individuals fleeing persecution with debt is unjust. The proposal is part of a broader reform of the asylum system, including replacing judges with public members to adjudicate appeals.

Under Mahmood’s Immigration and Asylum Bill, the Home Office will have enhanced authority to reclaim costs from adult asylum seekers who have received support. The bill, to be presented to Parliament, seeks to address the mounting pressure to phase out asylum hotels and streamline the asylum process.

Mahmood emphasized the need for those capable of contributing to do so, stating that asylum support is a right but also a responsibility. The envisaged repayment scheme would entail monthly installments until the debt is settled, with considerations on utilizing the tax and benefit system for collection.

As part of the proposal, migrants leaving the UK would need to settle the outstanding sum if they intend to return in the future. The average nightly cost per person for accommodation ranges from £23.25 in dispersal housing to £144 in hotels, with subsistence payments varying from £9.95 to £49.18 per person per week.

Advocates for asylum seekers have condemned the plan, highlighting its adverse impact on vulnerable individuals. The introduction of the £10,000 fee, they argue, contradicts the very notion of asylum support. Imran Hussain of the Refugee Council pointed out that the restriction on asylum seekers from working exacerbates their need for support.

Mahmood’s legislation also includes the establishment of an Independent Immigration Appeals Authority to handle appeals, aiming to alleviate the overwhelmed appeals tribunal system. Additionally, a new safe route will be created to enable employers to sponsor refugees arriving in the UK.

The proposal aligns with Mahmood’s vision of a sustainable asylum system, balancing support for genuine refugees with measures to prevent abuse of the system. The Home Office’s recent decision to utilize ex-military barracks and extend existing asylum sites has also stirred controversy within the asylum seeker community.
