Britons have the exciting opportunity to potentially win a staggering £1 billion lottery prize following the recent announcement. Allwyn, the new operator of the National Lottery, has revealed plans to introduce a new draw later this year that will be connected to the renowned Powerball game in the United States.
This new draw, scheduled three times weekly, offers players the chance to win a life-changing amount starting at £12 million, with unlimited rollovers leading to a jackpot that could reach £1 billion or more – the largest prize ever offered in the UK. Winners of the top Powerball prize will receive their winnings over a 30-year period, amounting to over £30 million annually if the full £1 billion is won.
Despite the immense prize, the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are challenging at 292 million to one, due to competing against participants from 48 US state lotteries. Each Powerball line costs £4, making it the most expensive National Lottery draw in history. However, there are more lower-tier prizes in the UK, such as a fixed £8 for matching two main numbers and £1 million for five main numbers.
The launch date for the UK Powerball draw is yet to be finalized, but players will select five main numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26, or opt for a Lucky Dip. Tickets can be purchased online or in-store until 11:55 pm the night before the draws on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, with the draws taking place around 4 am the following morning in Florida.
The introduction of the Powerball game in the UK marks the first time it has been held outside the US, expanding on the success of the pan-European Euromillions draw introduced in 2004. Additionally, Allwyn has announced significant changes to the main Lotto draw, offering players two chances to win with every £2 line, aiming to increase the number of Lotto millionaires from approximately 140 to around 345 annually.
