Britain’s former defense secretary has issued a warning, stating that the country’s heavy reliance on the United States for military support is no longer sustainable. Lord George Robertson emphasized that even after Donald Trump exits office, the UK’s ties with Washington will not revert to normalcy.

Citing long-term trends such as a growing focus on China and skepticism towards globalization, the ex-NATO chief predicted that the US would adopt a more transactional approach in its foreign policy, regardless of the White House occupant. Speaking at a Chatham House event, he urged the British government to increase defense spending amid escalating global instability.

Lord Robertson advocated for the UK to enhance its military autonomy, cautioning against the naive assumption that the US would always come to its aid during crises. He highlighted the detrimental effects of the UK’s excessive dependence on American military capabilities, stressing that this reliance is no longer viable.

The special relationship between the US and the UK has faced strain, particularly after Keir Starmer’s refusal to comply with Trump’s requests for involvement in conflicts. Lord Robertson criticized the British government for its complacency regarding defense matters and called for a shift away from the decades-long habit of relying heavily on US protection.

Meanwhile, the Lords International Relations and Defense Committee urged UK officials to dispel the sentimental notion of an everlasting special relationship with the US. They recommended recalibrating ties with Washington and strengthening relationships with other nations in Europe as a safeguard against an unreliable ally.

US Ambassador Warren Stephens reaffirmed the strong bond between the US and the UK, emphasizing their partnership in ensuring the security and prosperity of both countries.
