Ukraine’s military has conducted a significant long-distance strike into Russia, targeting an oil refinery in Ukhta, located 1,240 miles away from the Ukrainian border. The Lukoil-Ukhtaneftepererabotka facility was hit by a large-scale drone attack, causing substantial damage.
This strike represents one of the furthest reported attacks on Russian energy infrastructure since the conflict began. The assault was part of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to disrupt Vladimir Putin’s financial resources derived from the lucrative energy export sector.
Meanwhile, Ukraine accused Russia of being uncooperative in advancing peace negotiations. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Moscow was hesitant about participating in further talks brokered by the US to halt the hostilities.
Proposed talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Miami or Abu Dhabi were suggested by Washington for the following week. Ukraine promptly confirmed its attendance, while Zelensky expressed concerns about Russia’s reluctance to engage in the peace process.
Ukrainian drone teams reportedly launched a series of explosive drones as a demonstration of strength against Russian forces. This action came after a week of tragic violence, including deadly drone attacks by Kremlin troops that resulted in civilian casualties.
In a separate incident, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 106 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles in various regions, excluding the Komi Republic where the refinery strike occurred.
Notably, an earlier attack targeted the Lukoil-Volgograd refinery, causing a fire at the facility. This refinery, a key asset of Lukoil, processes millions of tons of oil annually and contributes significantly to the Kremlin’s revenue, much of which supports the ongoing war efforts.
Following the attack, Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed the impact on the Volgogradsky refinery, which supplies fuel to the Russian military. Subsequently, thousands of residents in Ukrainian cities were left without essential services due to damage to the energy infrastructure caused by Russian strikes.
The deliberate targeting of civilian energy supplies and infrastructure by Putin’s regime aims to undermine morale in Ukraine and weaken the population’s resolve in the face of the conflict.
