“Urgent Water Safety Talks Needed as Tragic Deaths Increase”

Published on

Parents are being advised to engage in crucial conversations with their children regarding water safety following a series of tragic incidents resulting in five deaths within lakes and reservoirs in just five days.

The concerning death toll across the UK has spurred calls for action from affected families, endorsing the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign. The surge in incidents has been noted by coastguards and RNLI teams in the north-west of England as individuals head to the seaside during the ongoing heatwave.

Simon Haycock, spearheading the Mirror’s campaign supported by the RNLI, Olympic champions, and the Royal Life Saving Society UK, expresses apprehension that the death toll, now exceeding 30 in recent months, may continue to rise.

Several recent fatalities have occurred in reservoirs, including one in Rotherham claiming the life of his 16-year-old son, Sam.

The need for urgent communication on water safety is emphasized by Haycock, stating, “It’s deeply disturbing. We have got imminent school holidays coming up. Parents must pass the water safety message onto their kids urgently, that conversation is never more important than it is now. We don’t need to be adding to these numbers we’ve had this year, they are already horrendous. This year has been the worst year since we lost Sam.”

Recent tragic incidents include the discoveries of the bodies of two 18-year-olds in Greater Manchester and Derbyshire amidst the scorching heatwave. The retrieval of an 18-year-old man’s body from the water near the weir at the Darley Abbey Mills complex in Derbyshire was announced by the local police.

In another incident in Greater Manchester, authorities found an unresponsive 18-year-old man in Dovestone Reservoir, Oldham, who was later pronounced dead at the scene despite medical efforts. Tragedy also struck in Lincoln, where a 16-year-old rescued from Swanholme Lakes succumbed to his injuries hours after initial treatment.

The recovery of a 49-year-old man’s body from Sykes Reservoir in Stockport further underscores the dangers of reservoirs, as mentioned by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s crew manager, Matt Black.

A recent water-related tragedy involved 21-year-old Rowan Booth, whose body was retrieved from Llyn Geirionydd near Trefriw in North Wales after a paddleboarding incident, leading his friends to support The Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam water safety campaign.

Haycock reiterates the urgency for governmental action, stressing the need for ‘Sam’s Law’ to be enacted by September to address the escalating numbers of water-related deaths. The campaign is also backed by Rotherham councillor Jodie Ryalls, who urges local councils to acknowledge the severity of the issue and take proactive measures to prevent further tragedies.

The prevalence of water-related fatalities surpassing those of knife crime underscores the gravity of the situation, prompting a call for heightened awareness and intervention by local authorities.
