“VAT on Summer Attractions Slashed for Great British Summer Savings”

Published on

The reduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) on summer attractions has been unveiled by Rachel Reeves as part of a comprehensive summer cost of living initiative. The Chancellor announced that the VAT rate on tickets for various attractions like zoos, museums, fairs, and theme parks will be decreased from 20% to 5% starting from June through September. This initiative, known as the ‘Great British Summer Savings’ scheme, will also provide complimentary bus travel for children aged five to 15 to alleviate financial pressures on families.

In a statement to Members of Parliament, Ms. Reeves emphasized the importance of enabling families to not only manage financially but also to enjoy quality time together without financial concerns. The Great British Summer Savings Scheme aims to assist families and bolster the hospitality sector. The reduced VAT rate will apply to both adult and children’s tickets for attractions such as fairs, theme parks, zoos, and museums, effective from June 25 to September 1. Additionally, the scheme will encompass children’s tickets for cinemas, concerts, soft play centers, and theaters, along with reducing the VAT on children’s meals in eateries from 20% to 5%.

Ms. Reeves further confirmed the suspension of fuel duty increase, which was originally planned, and the waiver of tariffs on more than 100 supermarket items. These measures are part of the government’s efforts to mitigate the impact on families stemming from the Iran conflict fallout.

Addressing concerns over energy bills, the Chancellor denounced Donald Trump’s Middle East conflict decisions as errors and assured readiness to act on energy price issues. As energy prices are expected to rise due to global oil and gas price surges following the Strait of Hormuz closure, Ms. Reeves highlighted ongoing government contingency planning to potentially offer targeted and temporary support for businesses facing market challenges.

Furthermore, Ms. Reeves emphasized the necessity for supermarkets to pass on the benefits of reduced tariffs to consumers entirely. She warned against any exploitation of the situation for excessive profits and announced plans to introduce stringent measures empowering regulatory bodies to intervene in case of rule violations.

Industry responses to the initiatives were positive, with UKHospitality’s chair, Kate Nicholls, applauding the VAT reduction for hospitality and urging potential inclusion of accommodation in the reduced rate to further aid families during vacations. Child Poverty Action Group’s Chief Executive, Alison Garnham, acknowledged the focus on children’s welfare in the support package but stressed the need for sustained investment to alleviate living costs and reduce child poverty.
