U.S. Vice-President JD Vance expressed his thoughts on the recent trade agreement with Canada during a fundraising event on Wednesday. Vance mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to appear tougher than U.S. President Donald Trump, while acknowledging Conservative MP Jamil Jivani as a valuable advocate for Canada.
At the private event in Southampton, N.Y., Vance described Carney as a “very amiable person” with whom he gets along well. However, Vance remarked that Carney often asserts his dominance by trying to outmatch Trump. He found it amusing that Carney portrayed this as a win for Canada when, in reality, concessions were made on various issues.
Vance highlighted the significant role of Jivani, emphasizing how the MP, with a positive rapport with the U.S., effectively advocated for Canada behind the scenes. He contrasted this by labeling Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre as a negligible figure in trade negotiations.
Regarding the trade deal, reports suggest that the U.S. will reduce tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, with Carney urging the return of American alcohol to Canadian shelves. Trump mentioned that the agreement would eliminate tariffs on American farmers. Dominic LeBlanc, Canada-U.S. Minister, is engaging in discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to finalize the deal by Saturday.
Vance conveyed Trump’s stance on the negotiations, explaining that the objective is to influence Canada’s behavior. He noted a shift towards a more Trump-like approach in Canada’s actions, influenced by ongoing discussions and relations between the countries.
The dynamic in Canada-U.S. relations altered following Trump’s re-election, resulting in trade tensions and threats of annexation. Vance indicated active involvement from Greer, along with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in the negotiations. He highlighted Jivani’s discreet yet impactful participation in the negotiation process.
Vance praised Jivani’s commitment to Canada’s success and their longstanding friendship. Jivani’s engagement in Washington meetings, including encounters with Vance and Greer, signifies his dedication to advancing Canada’s interests. Jivani’s efforts have stirred controversy within the Canadian Conservative Party, with Poilievre advocating for tariff-free agreements with Trump.
Despite Poilievre’s criticism of Jivani, emphasizing party representation, Jivani remains focused on contributing to Carney’s negotiation efforts with the U.S. administration.
