Lindsey, the wife of Rob Burrow, is dedicated to supporting families through their grief journey, emphasizing the importance of daily conversations about him within their family. Rob, the former Leeds Rhinos star, tragically passed away in June 2024 at 41 years old after battling motor neurone disease (MND) since December 2019. Lindsey, now a single mother to their three children, Macy, Maya, and Jackson, has been actively involved in fundraising for the Rob Burrow Foundation and assisting families coping with loss.
A recent study by the ‘Celebration Day’ charity revealed that over half of parents find it challenging to discuss death with their children. This charity encourages people to observe a day of remembrance to honor those who have shaped their lives. Lindsey shared with Sky News that despite initial difficulties, she strives to talk about Rob daily with her children, acknowledging the necessity of addressing grief openly.
Acknowledging the struggle of balancing personal grief with parenting responsibilities, Lindsey highlighted the importance of discussing bereavement openly. She mentioned the introduction of grief and bereavement education into the national curriculum starting September this year, in collaboration with Celebration Day providing ‘finding the words’ resources to schools.
Rob, known for his successful rugby league career with Leeds Rhinos, became a prominent advocate for MND awareness, raising substantial funds for research and contributing to the establishment of a specialized MND center in Leeds bearing his name. Lindsey, reflecting on coping with Rob’s passing, expressed gratitude for her children’s presence, emphasizing their role as her primary motivation and the embodiment of Rob’s spirit.
Lindsey previously shared her experience preparing their children for Rob’s death, acknowledging the unforeseen challenges of navigating such a loss. She highlighted the peacefulness of Rob’s passing, surrounded by love and family, which brought comfort amidst the heartbreaking situation. Lindsey has penned a memoir, Take Care, chronicling her caregiving journey and cherishing the memories created with Rob and their children.
Before his passing, Rob recorded a poignant video urging people to cherish every moment and face life’s challenges courageously. His messages of hope and resilience resonate as he wished for a cure for MND, leaving a lasting legacy of bravery and optimism.
