“Woman Escapes Abusive Partner Over Phone Invasion”

Published on

A woman in a state of fear had to arm herself with a knife and escape from her abusive boyfriend who attempted to invade her privacy by checking her phone. Liam Labourne physically assaulted his girlfriend by slapping, punching, and suffocating her upon discovering a birthday wish message from another man on her phone. The violent behavior of Labourne, residing in Dulverton Close, Bransholme, Hull, included regular physical abuse and intimidation towards the woman, particularly when he found content on her phone that displeased him, as revealed in court.

Labourne admitted to engaging in controlling and coercive conduct in Scunthorpe from January 1 to August 4, 2024, and pleaded guilty on the day of the trial at Hull Crown Court, leading to the dropping of other charges. The prosecution, represented by Ben Weeks, mentioned that Labourne and the 26-year-old woman initiated their relationship in August 2023. Following a welfare check by the police prompted by the woman’s sister due to noticeable changes in her behavior, Labourne’s abusive actions began, escalating to physical assaults, property damage, and constant surveillance of the woman’s activities.

The abusive behavior extended to verbal abuse, monitoring the woman’s movements, and resorting to violence whenever he was dissatisfied with her phone contents. Labourne’s escalating violence culminated in an incident where he assaulted the woman after finding another birthday message on her phone, causing her to flee in fear, seeking refuge behind bins while armed with a knife for protection. The traumatic events left the woman feeling emotionally scarred and fearful, leading to a loss of trust and self-worth.

Labourne, with a history of previous offenses including assault and criminal damage, was sentenced to three years in prison and issued a seven-year restraining order, in addition to a victims’ surcharge. Despite pleading guilty and expressing remorse through his legal representative Nadim Bashir, Labourne’s abusive actions have had long-lasting effects on the victim. The article concludes with resources for individuals facing domestic abuse and the importance of seeking support and advocacy in such situations.
