Yellowknife RCMP officials revealed that a routine traffic stop resulted in a drug trafficking probe, leading to the arrest and charging of three individuals following the search of a residence and commercial premises. The incident occurred on August 3 when law enforcement officers intercepted a vehicle on Highway 3 near Yellowknife, triggering an investigation under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act after detecting the odor of cannabis. The 21-year-old driver was detained, and a subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered over $13,000 in cash and 37 grams of marijuana. The driver was initially released without charges but was later apprehended at Yellowknife Airport on August 9.

Subsequently, a joint operation involving local RCMP officers and counterparts from Alberta, Yukon, Saskatchewan, and Ontario executed search warrants on a home and commercial establishment in Yellowknife associated with the case. During the search of a residence in Niven, authorities seized cash and suspected cocaine, leading to the arrest of an 18-year-old and a 22-year-old individual. Meanwhile, a search of the commercial property yielded drug trafficking equipment and additional cash. In total, over $37,000 in cash and 133 grams of suspected cocaine were seized as a result of the investigations.

The driver, hailing from Behchokǫ̀, is now facing charges related to possession and drug trafficking, whereas the other two suspects, aged 22 and 18 from Burnaby, B.C. and Toronto, Ont., respectively, are charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime. The accused have been taken into custody and are expected to appear in court at a later date, according to RCMP reports.
