Zoo Owners Speak Out on Crocodile Attack

Published on

The proprietors of a zoo where a three-year-old child was attacked by a crocodile have publicly addressed the incident for the first time. Andy and Tracey Johnson, who manage the zoo in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, described the distressing nature of the event that occurred on June 18.

The child fell 15 feet, sustaining a broken arm and pelvis upon landing on a concrete walkway before entering the water. Presently, the child is undergoing treatment for the injuries at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where authorities stated that he is in a stable condition but faces a lengthy recovery process.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was detained on suspicion of attempted murder following the occurrence at Johnsons of Old Hurst. Subsequently, he was released on bail as law enforcement indicated he was not fit for questioning, citing his learning difficulties and supervision by caregivers during the visit.

Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that the boy was injured by a crocodile after entering the enclosure. Emergency services were called to the zoo at 1:24 pm by the ambulance service after reports of the child sustaining severe injuries.

The authorities mentioned that the boy was rescued from the enclosure by zoo staff, with Tracey Johnson reportedly entering the enclosure to save the child.

Andy and Tracey Johnson have issued a statement acknowledging the traumatic incident two weeks ago, expressing gratitude for the swift and dedicated response from everyone present that day, including emergency services and visitors who offered assistance.

They conveyed their pride in their staff’s prompt actions and thanked the local community and individuals nationwide for their overwhelming support during this challenging period. They emphasized their continued hope for the child’s quick recovery and requested privacy, compassion, and support for the boy and his family.

In a statement released through Cambridgeshire Police on Wednesday, the boy’s family expressed appreciation for the zoo staff who rescued their son and thanked all involved in his care and recovery, focusing on aiding him through the difficult and prolonged recovery phase.
