Strictly Come Dancing sensation Amy Dowden is set to showcase her detective skills this week by delving into her Welsh ancestry, unveiling a potentially dark family tale and a deeply emotional family secret that brought her to tears.
In the upcoming episode of Who Do You Think You Are?, the 35-year-old professional dancer will take the spotlight as she embarks on a poignant journey through West Wales. Her exploration will involve investigating a rumored murder and unraveling the heartbreaking truth surrounding her grandfather’s adoption.
Amy’s quest commences with the tragic demise of her three-times great aunt Elinor, who passed away at the tender age of 14 on a farm back in 1888. Eager to piece together the mystery surrounding her young relative’s untimely death, the Caerphilly native ventures through Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire.
Expressing her enthusiasm for playing the role of a detective, Amy shared, “I found myself consumed with the desire to uncover more details swiftly. The hunger for answers was insatiable, pushing me to seek out the truth as rapidly as possible.”
While the enigma of the murder remains unsolved, Amy stumbles upon a heartwarming discovery during her journey – she learns that a valley in Wales, Cwm Nell, is named after one of her ancestors. Reflecting on this revelation, she remarks, “Witnessing the impact she made in her brief life is truly beautiful.”
However, it is on her father’s side of the family that Amy confronts the most devastating revelation. Driven by the desire to provide closure for her father, who had long been in the dark about his own father Frank’s birth family, Amy learns the poignant reason behind her grandfather being the only one out of six siblings to be informally adopted.
Frank was taken in as a baby following the passing of his mother Louisa due to breast cancer at the age of 39. With his father Bill, a Welsh miner, struggling to support their six children amidst the 1921 miners’ strike, the family faced immense challenges.
Amy reflects on the emotional discovery, stating, “It was a shocking revelation that answered many lingering questions. Previously, we were perplexed as to why my grandfather Frank, among several siblings, was the only one given up. The newfound information evoked empathy and deep sadness for their plight.”
The journey also sheds light on her great-grandfather’s valiant service during the war and the hardships endured by her working-class mining family. Amy emphasizes, “Understanding the historical context takes on a different meaning when it directly impacts your own family.”
Growing up with a strong Welsh heritage, Amy’s connection to her roots has deepened through this experience. She expresses, “It has heightened my pride in being Welsh even further.” Intrigued by her discoveries, her parents retraced her steps, visiting each location featured in the program.
The episode has brought together various family members, including Amy’s second cousin. She shares, “It has fostered heartwarming connections among previously unacquainted family members.”
