Twenty passengers were injured in Berlin due to a tram crash that caused cars to derail, resulting in a dozen individuals being rushed to the hospital with at least 20 people sustaining injuries.

Following the derailment in the Neu-Hohenschönhausen neighborhood of northeastern Berlin, over 50 firefighters quickly responded to the scene.

Reports from local media indicated that the tram on the M17 line collided with a power pole and was torn open around 9:30 am. The CEO of the Berlin public transport company (BVG) addressed the incident at the crash site just after 11 am.

Transport chief Henrik Falk expressed deep sorrow over the distressing scenes witnessed, conveying thoughts for the injured passengers. He mentioned that the cause of the accident, whether technical, human error, or a medical emergency, still required investigation.

According to a spokesperson from the fire department, they received an emergency call at 9:29 am reporting that a tram on Wartenberger Straße near Arnimstraße had derailed. Fortunately, no train parts overturned during the incident.

The collision with a power pole and subsequent tearing open of a section of the tram were confirmed by a German news website. The fire department deployed 51 personnel to the scene, where three passengers suffered severe injuries and 17 sustained minor injuries. Twelve individuals were transported to hospitals for treatment.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to deactivate power to the tram, while alternative bus services were arranged after the M5 and M17 lines were disrupted due to the crash.
