Broadcaster Bob Harris has announced his decision to step down from hosting Radio 2 programs Sounds Of The 70s and Radio 2 Country due to health issues. The 80-year-old radio veteran, who disclosed his battle with prostate cancer that has spread to his upper spine in April, expressed that leaving his shows was a challenging choice.

Reflecting on his impressive 56-year broadcasting career, Harris, a dedicated BBC supporter, emphasized his gratitude for the freedom to craft his programs. He cherished his time at Radio 2, especially highlighting the Radio 2 Country Show’s role in the UK’s growing country music scene and the joy of presenting Sounds Of The 70s on Sunday afternoons.

In a heartfelt message to his listeners, Harris expressed regret over his health concerns necessitating his departure but emphasized the importance of focusing on his well-being. Helen Thomas, the head of Radio 2, praised Harris as a radio legend and thanked him for his contributions to the popular shows.

With Shaun Keaveny set to take over Sounds Of The 70s, he expressed his admiration for the music of the ’70s and his commitment to continuing Harris’s legacy. Meanwhile, Darius Rucker will temporarily host The Radio 2 Country Show on Thursdays.

Harris, known for his advocacy for various music genres, including country, folk, and Americana, has left a lasting impact on the music industry. Despite his departure, his influence on radio and music remains profound.
