TV personality Harry Enfield recently shared that his fondness for a popular wellness trend has resulted in a significant health concern. Widely recognized for his work on Harry Enfield & Chums and other TV shows, the 65-year-old comedian disclosed that his frequent cold water swims have led to a serious health issue.

Following a visit to the doctor for a hearing aid fitting, Harry was diagnosed with exostosis, commonly known as ‘surfer’s ear’. This condition, as explained by the NHS, is characterized by abnormal bone growth in the ear canal due to prolonged exposure to cold water and wind.

During an appearance on the Off Menu podcast, Harry mentioned his partial deafness and the presence of stalactites in his ears from swimming in Highgate Ponds. He shared his experience of being informed about the bone growth by healthcare professionals, noting the discomfort of potential surgical removal.

Despite the rising popularity of cold water swimming, exemplified by celebrities like Harry Styles, Jamie Dornan, and Kate Middleton, the activity is not without risks. While enthusiasts tout various health benefits, such as alleviating depression and grief, potential dangers include respiratory reflexes upon entry, increased heart rate, and blood pressure spikes. Other risks involve hypothermia, cold incapacitation, and strain on the heart, emphasizing the importance of caution when engaging in this trend.
