Recently announcing his bid for leadership, Burnham faces competition from former Health Secretary Wes Streeting. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer, the current Labour leader, expressed support for Burnham and highlighted the importance of focusing on the upcoming Greater Manchester by-election if Burnham emerges victorious.

Starmer stressed the need for unity within the party, emphasizing the significance of the impending mayoral contest in Manchester. While he prefers to avoid internal challenges, Starmer affirmed his readiness to defend his position if necessary.
